In this web extra, Shashi Tharoor also compares his role at the UN with being involved in Indian politics.
In this web extra, Mehdi Hasan asks leading Indian politician and public intellectual Shashi Tharoor if India will be successful in its bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
The MP says "it will get one inevitably because the whole logic of the Security Council is having those countries that are indispensable, if you like, to manage the world."
Tharoor also says the United Nations and Indian politics are "two completely different worlds." He adds, "the one thing that unites them is that they're both opportunities to make a difference to humanity."
Asked if he would ever consider returning to the UN, Tharoor says "I think that train has left the station. I had a very good innings, 29 years."
