ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said the government needs solid evidence to form a judicial commission probing allegations levelled against any political party.
Nisar said that a committee has been constituted to probe the claims levelled by Karachi's former mayor Mustafa Kamal and “we have advertised in media that if anyone holds any information and evidence regarding the MQM’s alleged links with RAW or the money laundering allegations, then he should come forward”.
“These are some serious allegations and can only be prosecuted through courts after proper evidence is submitted before them,” said the interior minister while addressing a press conference in the federal capital.
Though media is helping judiciary and law enforcement agencies but some people exaggerate things a lot during talk-shows, he complained.
These analysts are arguing that investigations against Axact were initiated the very next day but Sarfraz Merchant and Mustafa Kamal's allegations were ignored, he said.
Merchant is the former donor and a close associate of top MQM leaders who is now a suspect in the money-laundering case against the MQM leadership.
"Can we make a JIT on some analyst's wishes? Judiciary and law enforcement agencies do not work that way."
Nisar said his relations with MQM are not considered to be very good but those who criticise the government for its 'inaction' must also question the former governments who shared power with MQM.
It was the incumbent government which reopened the Imran Farooq murder case, money laundering case and shared intelligence with British government, said the interior minister.
It has become a fashion to demand the formation of a judicial commission. But the formation of judicial commission requires proper evidence, said Nisar.
"A judicial commission cannot be formed on someone's political statements."
If the Federal Investigation Agency — upon the available evidence — decides that this case can be pursued, then in next two weeks we will ask the British government for legal assistance and access to Sarfraz Merchant and other concerned people, said Nisar.
"I urge the people of Pakistan not to pay heed to these pseudo-intellectuals and trust only the government as this matter can only be solved through legal means," the minister said.
Nisar had earlier displayed displeasure over individuals questioning the government's silence on the issue.
“There was no documentary evidence provided by Mustafa Kamal to support his allegations, they were mere verbal claims," he had said.
