Iran will not cooperate with the "untrustworthy" US-led coalition against the Islamic State (IS) organisation in Syria, a senior Iranian diplomat told FRANCE 24 on Tuesday.
Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the head of Iran's national security and foreign policy parliamentary committee, told FRANCE 24 in an exclusive interview that the coalition cannot be trusted.
"The very countries that created the Islamic State group are now part of a coalition that ... wants to destroy them," he said. "How can a contradiction like this be resolved? It's only natural that we cannot trust [the coalition]. We don't want to enter a political game."
The US-led coalition –– which includes Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia –– is waging an air campaign against the IS group in Syria. The coalition has been pounding jihadist positions in besieged Kobane in a bid to prevent the town falling to the militant group.
Iran 'will resume nuclear activities'
Boroujerdi also warned that Iran will resume its nuclear activities if no deal is reached with the so-called P5+1 group of countries –– including Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States and Germany –– by the November 24 deadline set by the group for a comprehensive agreement.
The aim of the talks is to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon. The P5+1 wants suspect facilities closed down, a scaling back of Iran’s enrichment programme and new international inspections.
In return, the global community would gradually lift the crippling economic sanctions imposed on the Islamic republic.
“If for any reason there is no agreement, then this path will no longer remain one-way, with us sticking to our end of the bargain, while our opposite numbers deliver nothing,” he said. “If needs be, we will embark on a legal process ... to take everything back to square one."
